The Ohio Legislature recently passed a new law known as Senate Bill 29. The law requires that we explain how we monitor your child's activities while using a school-issued technology device. Please note that Heartland Tech has not implemented any new or changed monitoring services. What has changed is the notices we will send you when we monitor your child’s activity.

Senate Bill 29 requires the following notice of general monitoring: Heartland Tech is electing to monitor all school-issued devices, as that term is defined in Ohio Revised Code 3319.325, either directly or through a technology provider. The general monitoring includes but is not limited to:

• Teachers regularly access assignments, quizzes, tests, messages, and other content that your child creates and sends to the teacher.
• Teachers use GoGuardian software to remotely view students’ screens and monitor internet use in their classrooms.
• This helps keep students on task.
• Teachers can view the editing history of an assignment. This is used to verify that students are doing their own work and not  copying assignments from another source.

Heartland Tech generally monitors these features for the following reasons:
• Noncommercial educational purposes of instruction, technical support, and/or exam proctoring.
• To prevent and/or respond to threats to life or safety, including bullying.
• To comply with federal or state law.
• To participate in federal or state funding programs.

Notices of additional monitoring: If the school accesses electronic monitoring features other than the general monitoring above, we will send a notice to the parent/guardian’s email address within 72 hours. The notice will explain why we monitored your child's school-issued device and which features of the device were accessed. If a threat or bullying was involved, it will also include a description of the circumstances.

Below are some of the additional items that Heartland Tech can monitor. We collect and store these items routinely, but we only access them for the reasons allowed by law.

 • We log a history of web-browsing activity.
• We store the documents and content your child creates on a school-issued device.
• We store messages your child sends and receives using a school-issued device.
• Please be assured that location history is only accessed if a device is lost or stolen, or as otherwise permitted by law.
• Other student interactions with a school-issued device.

Monitoring is in effect at the school and also away from the school. If a school-issued device is used outside the school, that activity is still recorded and can be accessed for reasons allowed by the law. Please contact Principal’s Office if you have any questions.
