What is Heartland Technical Education Center?

Heartland Technical Education Center (formerly Ashland County-West Holmes Career Center) is a career-technical school that serves both high school students and adults. High school students, as early as their sophomore year, can enroll in one of Heartland Tech’s career technical programs. Heartland Tech serves adults who are looking for training, retraining, and the opportunity obtain to their high school diploma.

What programs are available for adult learners?

Heartland Technical Education Center offers a variety of adult education programs, including Medical Assisting, Dental Assisting, Phlebotomy Technology, Electrical Technologies, Millwright Industrial Maintenance Technician, Fundamental Welding and Welding Technology and Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning & Refrigeration (HVAC/R).

How do I apply for admission?

Adult students need to complete an application available online at www.heartlandtech.org or come into the office, and provide proof of high school diploma or equivalency. There is a $50 application fee.
Students pursing an adult diploma are not required to provide proof of graduation or equivalency or pay the $50 application fee.

Is there an age limit for adult education?

Not at all! As long as you have completed high school or equivalency, you are welcome to apply. Students pursing an adult diploma must be 18 or older and no longer enrolled in high school.

Can I enroll if I don’t have a high school diploma?

Heartland Tech offers four Adult Diploma Programs: Dental Assisting, Medical Assisting, Phlebotomy Technology and Fundamental Welding. The adult diploma programs allow students to earn a high school diploma issued by the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce while completing the technical program at the same time at no cost to the student. Potential students must be residents of Ohio, 18 or older and no longer enrolled in high school.

Do programs offer industry certifications?

Yes, all of our programs are aligned to industry recognized certifications and credentials. Our mission is to inspire students to career success by providing real-world skills and credentials.

How much does adult education program cost?

Tuition varies by program length and required materials (tools, uniforms, etc.). Adult diploma programs are offered at no cost to the student.

Do I need to buy my own scrubs, uniforms, tools and books?

All programs require books and possibly scrubs, personal protection equipment and tools. These items are built into the program cost structure. However, students wishing to purchase their own, may do so, as long as they meet the safety requirements of the program. A separate list of books, tools, equipment and uniforms is available for students.

Is financial aid available for adult students?

Many programs are Pell Grant eligible. You should complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) using Heartland’s school code 031170. Students can apply for Federal Direct Loans as well.

Are there payment plans available?

Yes, Heartland Tech offers interest-free payment plans to help spread the cost across the length of the program.

Can I use my VA benefits?

Generally, yes. Heartland Tech is proud to support veterans.

Are there scholarships and other funding options available?

Heartland Tech offers scholarships to graduates of Ashland High School, Hillsdale High School, Loudonville High School, Mapleton High School and West Holmes High School who enroll in a 600–900 hour program within three years of graduation.

What are the class hours?

Specific times depend on the individual program. Some programs are offered in the evenings, while others follow a daytime schedule.

How long will it take me to complete an adult program at Heartland Tech?

Heartland Tech programs range in length from 3 months to 10 months depending on the program.

Can I work while attending Heartland?

Many of our students work part-time or full-time. However, since technical training is "hands-on," attendance is critical.

Does Heartland offer online classes?

Heartland Tech programs are hands-on and require in-person attendance. The Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning & Refrigeration (HVAC/R) program is hybrid, meaning class meets three nights a week and one night via distance learning.

Do you provide job placement after graduation?

We have a dedicated business services and placement coordinator who assists students with externships and job placement.
